February First Friday Art Walk
Posted by: Lincoln Arts Council
Every First Friday of the month is an event that many communities across the nation celebrate. In Lincoln's Art Community, it allows a chance for local art galleries and establishments to open their doors to the public and have open house events where the public can come and see what is new in the art world. Here on the Lincoln Arts Council website, we offer a complete guide to all of open houses for Lincoln's First Friday Art Walk. If you know of an event that is happening, that is not listed in our guide, please feel free to email "Events" at events@artscene.org and we will be sure to post it as soon as possible.
Support our local art scene and see what's new in the world of the arts! Happy First Friday!

Friday, February 3 at 6:00 pm
Location: 815 O Street
The 815 Presents: Final Friday at The 815.
After nearly two years spent sharing local art with the community, The 815 will host its Final First Friday on February 3. To celebrate the success of The 815, all artists who have shown on the lower level have been invited back to display a few of their favorite pieces. Artists will include Robert Donlan, Tim and Katie Frisch, Eddie Gentry, Rob Liliedahl, Daniel Joseph May, Aimee Smith, Andrei Sorokin, Gonca Yengin, and more. The Artists on the Edge will show upstairs for the final time after 23 consecutive First Fridays.
The 815 first invited art lovers to stop in, have a cup of coffee, and enjoy the Artists on the Edge and an up-and-coming local artist back in April of 2010. Since then The 815 has become a staple of the First Friday art walk, and the city’s leading promoter of outsider art. On the main level the Artists on the Edge have been able to share their work with thousands of visitors, and sell approximately $20,000 worth of art in the process. On the lower level, over a dozen local artists have had their own private showing, many for the first time.
Though The 815 is closing its doors as a venue, the men and women behind The 815, members of 2 Pillars Church, will continue to show and promote local art in Lincoln. In October, The 815 began featuring an up-and-coming local artist each month in the Grand Manse Gallery, and will continue curating that space for the foreseeable future. In December, The 815 partnered with Indigo Bridge Books to make the Artists on the Edge the artists-in-residence at Indigo Bridge. The 815 will continue to support this talented community of artists as their work is now be available for people to view and purchase on a daily basis at the bookstore.

Steven DeLair studied fine art at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln before living and working in Arizona. After nearly 30 years, he returned to Nebraska. His early works, realist large-scale oils, have recently been replaced by a new body of work exploring new methods, materials and style. This conscious break from the past has resulted in richly saturated watercolors and acrylics that balance the line between reality and abstraction. The few canvases in the show reflect the influence of his recent experimentation through more traditional methods. DeLair’s color and style, reminicent of the Bay area painters, adds a unique perspective to the Nebraskan landscape.
DeLair’s work has been included in private and corporate collections internationally and featured in national publications.LUX Center for the Arts

Kris has been putting pencil to paper for the last two years in his quest to become a certified tattoo artist. In the process his work has grown in both skill and content. We are proud to present the first exhibit of his illustration work. In the words of Mr. Maxwell, his style of art could most closely be described as a neo-traditional style of tattoo flash. Drawing influence from the artwork of early American electric tattoo artists and blending it with his own off-kilter style of visual art Maxwell has created a style that he himself would describe as comic book traditional tattoo flash.

Nicole Jean Hill
"I create photographs along the periphery of rural communities in the western United States - the spaces nestled between national forest lands and private property or the easement zones along county roads and greenbelts. Existing as neither private nor public, these liminal spaces simultaneously imply autonomy and lawlessness. Without a clearly defined function, these borderlands are an overlap of unruliness and regulation. They contain evidence of the disruptive character of human activity, efforts at cultivation, and the inherent wildness of an environment."
Nicole Jean Hill was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio. She received a BFA in photography from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and an MFA in Studio Art from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her photographs have been exhibited throughout the U.S., Europe, Canada and Australia, including Gallery 44 in Toronto, the Australia Centre for Photography in Sydney, and the Blue Sky Gallery in Portland, Oregon. Her work has been featured in the Magenta Foundation publication Flash Forward: Emerging Photography from the U.S., U.K., and Canada, the Humble Art Foundation's The Collector's Guide to Emerging Photography, and National Public Radio. Hill has been an artist-in-residence at the Center for Land Use Interpretation in Wendover, Utah, the Ucross Foundation in Wyoming, and the Newspace Center for Photography in Portland, Oregon. She currently resides in Humboldt County, California and is an Associate Professor of Art at Humboldt State University.
